The US exploited differences between Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds since
Iraqi society was already deeply divided. These divisions were
manipulated by coalition forces to subdue the population. Between 2006
and 2008, a sectarian conflict erupted which resulted in over 60,000
deaths most of them civilians. Now there is the threat of Iraq becoming even more divisive, one of them becoming an Islamic state based on Sharia law under the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
(ISIS). Since the US invasion, Iraqi population has constantly
witnessed terrorist attacks resulting in numerous deaths including women
and children. Divisions between Sunni and Shite are even greater today
than under Saddam Hussein.
US Vice-President Joe Biden wanted to systematically divide Iraq
along ethnic-lines into three states. He wrote a New York Times opinion
editorial in 2006 with Council of Foreign Relations member Leslie H.
